Cornstarch + vibration = …

This is freaking incredible: truly an Amazing Liquid

Maybe I should switch to physics and study fluid dynamics….

Scott?!

Posted on Saturday December 31, 2005 at 3:23 pm.

This has to be one of the greatest ideas I’ve ever seen: Sign tallying military deaths upsets Army. Especially since said sign is right outside an Army recruiting office.

“The sacrifices our troops and their families are making are an important part of Minnesotans’ lives right now,” said Kelley, one of several Democrats seeking to unseat Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty next year. “If this draws attention to that, it’s all to the good as far as I’m concerned.”

As of Friday, the sign reported 2,177 troops had been killed and 16,155 injured, after 1,017 days in Iraq.

It really confused me when I started to read the article, though…

DULUTH, Minn. (AP) — Scott Cameron never imagined his modest memorial to American troops in Iraq would transform a quiet street here into the latest front of the nation’s tense debate about the war in Iraq.

I was initially thinking, “Hell yeah, Scott!” but then… “Wait… Minnesota?” then, “Vietnam veteran? Oh… guess it’s someone else.”

(I went to high school with someone named Scott Cameron. This would be very uncharacteristic for him, I think.)

Still a cool thing to do, though.

I applaud the leak

Posted on Friday December 30, 2005 at 5:31 pm.

Does this seem terribly wrong to anyone else— that the Justice Department is now investigating the source of the leak revealing Shrub & NSA’s secret wiretaps? You know, that the person who brought the crime to light is being prosecuted, and the criminal is proud of it?

Anyone?

Santorum smells like….

Posted on Friday December 30, 2005 at 3:32 pm.

We’re looking at Election 2006 already, and this news is good: Santorum’s already down 12 points.

Heh heh… ’cause we all know what santorum is made out of (link suggests sex acts ;-) ). Come to think of it, Rick Santorum is made out of the same thing….

On the minus side, his likely challenger, Bob Casey Jr. is very centrist, even anti-choice.

Oh well. I’ll make the sacrifice of voting for him.

Beards: A Hairy Situation

Posted on Wednesday December 28, 2005 at 12:41 pm.

Why is it that I always find good links after I say I’m taking a posting break?

Anyway, this Collegehumor article about the plight of the beardless was quite humorous.

We, the smooth-cheeked, aren’t axe-carrying, blue-ox befriending quicker-picker-upper paper towel spokesmen. No. We are not the type of guys who answer the phone, “Go,” or answer a knock on our door with “She’s open!” We’re more “Hello?” and “Please come in” people, as we have more time to soften our etiquette with all the time we save not shaving.

Of course, this is made especially poignant by the fact that I forgot to bring a razor to VA and am thus seeing exactly what develops on its own. It’s depressing.

…And a happy new year

Posted on Tuesday December 27, 2005 at 11:53 pm.

I’m going to take a little break from posting and spend some time with my new addition to the family. I’ll be back Friday-ish when I get back up to Philadelphia.

In the meantime, feel free to occupy yourself with a new webcomic I found— Least I Could Do. Start at the beginning if you want; it’s low quality at first, but it’s still humorous and gets better quickly.

Very dirty, innuendo-wise, but they somehow manage to keep it PG-13.

Happy Boxing Day

Posted on Monday December 26, 2005 at 6:24 pm.

(Or is it “Merry Boxing Day”? I dunno. In the U.S. I guess it’s just “happy return-exchange-and-bargain-hunt day”. Oh, and there’s a boring music nerd post ahead— you’ve been warned.)

Anyway, like I said the other day, I went guitar shopping with my parents today. I was planning on looking mostly at Martins, but I kept an open mind, and I’m damn glad I did. I came home with a beauty — a Taylor 214-E — and for a steal, too.

It was almost the exact opposite of what I was planning on— it’s a grand auditorium shape instead of dreadnought, satin finish instead of gloss, sapele instead of mahogany, and it has built-in electronics when I was planning on adding them later.

Are my impulse-buying ways over? Probably not.

“Cheeto?”

Posted on Monday December 26, 2005 at 10:57 am.

When I went to see Munich the other day (very good; recommended), I saw a trailer for a new flick called American Dreamz.

It looks like Dennis Quaid plays a very good clueless president, which should make it worth seeing all by itself: “Did you know there are two… three kinds of Iraqistanis?”

But lampooning American Idol too? Should be hot.

(Make sure you watch the trailer all the way to the end.)

Feliz Navidad

Happy celebrate-Jesus*-even-though-he-was-probably-born-in-the-Fall day, everyone!

(* As you might have figured out, I’m more into the J-man as a philosopher and ethicist, rather than the Son of God.)

I’m excited that I get to go to the local Guitar Center tomorrow to pick out my present from the parents: I’m thinking either a Martin D-16GT or a Taylor 310, but I’m planning on looking around plenty. (I’m bad about making snap judgements on big purchases.)

Anyway. Hope everyone’s having a good holiday time.

A final twist indeed

Posted on Friday December 23, 2005 at 10:44 pm.

Another great article about why this “war on Christmas” nonsense is even more, well… nonsensical: Merry Religious Assimiliation Day.

The pilgrims in New England, led by Governor William Bradford, attempted to penalize all pagan rituals associated Christmas celebration. Carols, tree decorations and gift exchange were perceived as heathen traditions marring the sacred date. In a twist of irony, removing the pagan celebration rites from Christmas renders the day moot as analysis seems to indicate the birth of Christ was more likely to have occurred in the summertime.
