Another “iron”

Posted on Monday October 30, 2006 at 12:23 pm.

Another resume out today: Northstar Neuroscience, which deals with post-stroke cortical recovery, among other things.

I heard back from BioNeuronics; they said they’d probably talk to my prof early this week. I hope it goes well.

Sorry to keep updating like this; I feel like the more irons in the fire I get, the better off I am. (And posting here reminds me that I really am trying.)

But do let me know if it gets annoying. Hopefully I’ll be able to stop soon for good.

Update:
I’m getting a lot of hits from one ISP in Seattle, especially on my “hire me” post from yesterday, where I linked to the company. (Hello, if you’re reading this.)

Update 2:
I think the other two companies I mentioned in the past couple days have found my page as well. Do they really search their referrers that thoroughly?

Update 3:
I took down the request for advice because I realized I’m not going to really change anything.

It is, but…

Wow. This is surprising (video), even from a football commentator.

Now taking bets on how long it is before the HRC (rightfully) asks for his termination.

Hire me, please!

Sent off two cover letter/resume packets today: BioNeuronics and Medtronic.

These are pretty much “dream job” qualifiers for me, so keep your fingers crossed— I sure am.

I feel surprisingly optimistic— my lab’s PI, Dr. Litt, said he’d speak to the CEO of BioNeuronics on my behalf (they license research from our group), and I’m going to Seattle with Rachel over Thanksgiving anyway, so hopefully I’ll at least be able to see their offices. (I’m hoping for an interview, of course, but I’ll take what I can get.)

“The future, Conan?”

Love it: Warning Signs from the future!

“Let’s slow it down more…”

Did anyone else see Hugh Laurie on SNL tonight?

Why did it have to end?! It was like getting a fresh, Americanized episode of Jeeves and Wooster, especially that great first “ghost hunter” sketch.

When his hi-larious “protest song” gets posted to YouTube, as it inevitably will, someone please send a link my way. (Though I felt like the audience didn’t really appreciate it….)

Go to The Hague, Henry

Kissinger is coming to Penn next month as our Fall speaker.

Anyone else want to come to Irvine with “WAR CRIMINAL OFF PENN CAMPUS” signs?

Not everybody loves stem cells

Posted on Thursday October 26, 2006 at 10:18 pm.

An update to the article below: I don’t get it.

To have any chance of really counteracting the Michael J. Fox “stem cells for McCaskill” commercial, don’t they need some celebrity with Parkinson’s saying that they don’t want to pursue the current best hope for a cure? (I don’t count my beloved DBS— that’s a treatment.)

As it is, it just seems like a bunch of B-list celebs with opinions. As I heard someone say (I don’t remember who), “Perfectly healthy people campaigning against a possible cure for diseases they don’t have? How courageous!”

Speaking of Parkinson’s

Oh, Rush Limbaugh. Could you be a bigger tool if you tried?

His body visibly wracked by tremors, actor Michael J. Fox appears in a political ad that was the subject of widespread discussion on Monday after conservative radio commentator Rush Limbaugh claimed Fox was “either off his medication or acting.”

Update:
Luckovich agrees.

Oh, Chuck…

Chuck Norris is the most recent columnist for some right wing rag.

Perhaps that’ll quell some of the Norris-mania, which seems to be on the downturn anyway.

Busy break

Posted on Wednesday October 25, 2006 at 1:07 pm.

I just returned to class after our mid-semester Fall break. The weekend was notable for a few things— scheduling classes for my final semester at Penn, watching a DBS electrode implant surgery, and job hunting.

On the academic front, it looks like I’m going to have three classes (nine hours) plus senior design next semester. It’s pretty sweet— I only have class on Tuesday and Thursday. Unfortunately, I have to get up at 10:30 on those days. But it is for an interesting-sounding course on models of human memory with this guy, who works with my recently-mentoring professor, Dr. Litt. I’m really looking forward to all three classes, really.

On Monday I got the chance to observe implantation of electrodes on a patient with Parkinson’s. Not much to say about that, except that it was fun to scrub in and watch the procedure from beginning (MRI imaging) to end (putting in the battery pack). One part of that procedure — getting the correct depth on electrodes — is the focus of my senior design project.

Yesterday (Tuesday) I got an e-mail from the Hopkins Applied Physics Lab asking for more information, presumably to see if they want to interview me. I think I mentioned them before— they’re the ones that do a lot of DoD contracting and not much biology. Still, it sounds interesting from an engineering standpoint, and it would make use of my Matlab experience.

I also posted my resume on Monster and got a response to it this morning from a research data management company called IDBS. They’re based in Central NJ, so the relocation wouldn’t be too hard. We’ll see how the phone interview goes.

I think that’s about it. Sorry for the lack of posts of late. It’ll definitely pick up by next semester, and I’ll post updates about the job hunt.
