Edwards is in

John Edwards will announce his candidacy for president tomorrow. Not as good as announcing on Daily Show, though.

Bozo the Clown maybe?

You know how they say that famous deaths come in threes? Well, this sure is shaping up to be a weird one: Gerald Ford and James Brown.

I don’t know how the third could be any more disparate.

F for effort

I was wondering how long it would be before Obama’s first “scandal” surfaced.

Though as first scandals go, this one is pretty weak. Try again, mudslingers.

DVD weekend update

Watched A Scanner Darkly. Dark, fascinating, tweaky, and very entertaining. A good sci-fi adaptation. The rotoscoping even seemed to cover up some of Keanu’s, ah… artistic shortcomings.

I’ll have to read the book to fill in the blanks, I think. I’ve read other PKD works, and this comes a lot closer to capturing the feel of his writing than other film adaptations I’ve seen. (Even Blade Runner.)

Recommended, especially for fans of dark sci-fi.

Weekend o’ DVDs

Posted on Sunday December 17, 2006 at 1:30 pm.

Big movie weekend, what with classes being over and not having an exam until Tuesday. Some short reviews:

  • The Italian Job: No idea why i’ve never seen this before. (Rachel got to roll her eyes at all the Italian stereotypes, but also put Torino on her “to-visit” list when she’s in Rome next semester.) It was entertaining (especially Benny Hill), and it was great filmmaking, but of course, I felt like I was left in the lurch.
  • The Omen (1976): Enjoyable; classic “creepy”. I can’t decide whether I want to see the sequels.
  • The Omen (2006): Why?
  • Wordplay: Lots of fun. Jon Stewart’s enthusiasm made the first half of the movie, and the second half was actually suspenseful and damn near heartbreaking. But why oh why does that nerdy woman talk like that? (We had to look away.)
  • Little Miss Sunshine: Darkly hilarious and… well, I’m searching for a word other than “heartwarming”, but it’s not coming. Steve Carrell was great; he really showed his versatility. (I’ve heard people say, even after seeing this, that he’s one-note, but my god, the first shot of him in the film is incredible. He might get depressed on The Office, but that expression in LMS is despair at the soul-crushing level. And he’s the number-one Proust scholar in the country.)

Loved the music; after the clip of “Chicago” I thought it all sounded like Sufjan, but it was original. There was one bit where Rachel complained they ripped off one of the Chevy Chase National Lampoon movies, but I didn’t think it was in the same league. The filmmakers probably assumed that the viewing audiences wouldn’t overlap too much.

Brick and A Scanner Darkly are sitting on top of my TV. Hopefully I’ll finish them in time to get some studying done.

Plus, I think it’s almost time for my sorta-annual LOTR marathon. I probably won’t have time here; maybe in Auburn or the beginning of next semester?

Addendum

Speaking of Auburn, I’ll probably be back around the 31st. I’ll be in Northern VA before that— probably leaving campus this Friday.

The only part of the break I’m not looking forward to is the transit between those two: thirteen hours in a Prius with my parents, sister, and dog.

Good gas mileage, though.

House vs. God

Posted on Sunday December 17, 2006 at 1:01 pm.

How’s this for irony? The Parent’s Television Council has named Fox most the “anti-religious” network.

The best part? Not only is it due to the obvious contenders, Simpsons and Family Guy, but they throw in a mention for House as well.

(Truth be told, I tend to think House is more of a cautionary tale against cynicism and atheism, but with so many cynical atheist characters, who can tell?)

And yeah, the title of this post is the title of a season two episode, probably one of the episodes the PTC thought especially irreligious.

On the run already

Clinton-Obama Ticket Stirs Fear in GOP

Hmm… how about Obama-Clinton instead? Or Edwards-Obama? Or Clark-Obama? Or Clark-Edwards? Or yada yada yada?

(Yeah, my support is still up for grabs obviously, despite the ridiculously long time since my last post…)
