Trebek swears?

Metafilter links to a really good collection of “What I’ve Learned” articles from Esquire.

Alex Trebek is great, as is (surprisingly?) Alyssa Milano. And Homer Simpson, of course:

The intelligent man wins his battles with pointed words. I’m sorry — I meant sticks. Pointed sticks.

Awards for Hugh Laurie

Chalk up another Golden Globe for Hugh Laurie.

Is this finally his year for an Emmy? The season so far says “yes”.

“I know.”

Sometimes when I’m watching a movie just to kill time, I’ll put on one of my old favorites, thinking, “Well, I’ll just listen and not pay too much attention.” Very often, things in the film will hit me over the head and remind me why I love it.

I’m doing a double shift at the ol’ Video Vault tonight, and that was the case with Star Wars (ANH) and Empire Strikes Back. Especially poignant moments:

  • Luke walking into the Tatooine sunset, looking at the twin suns (this bit)
  • The final “award ceremony” scene
  • “I love you.” “I know.” (from ESB, not ROTJ)
  • “I am your father!” (mostly I try to imagine how shocking that must have been in 1980)

Of course, a major contributor in all of these scenes (especially the first one) was John Williams’ score.

There were others, but I can’t think of them at the moment. Any suggestions?

Two billion songs?

Fred Armisen does a great Steve Jobs, and this SNL sketch parodying the iPhone release is no different.

I laugh because it’s true.

“Modern Times” no more

Michael Brecker passed away today. It is a sad day for saxophonery everywhere.

I BOOK(ed) IT

I want one. Who else remembers BOOK IT! and the big purple buttons?

Worth the fiver

I joined Metafilter this evening so I could make a lame quip about Emo Philips (read down a few comments) and echo praise for a great project at Penn called Pennsound.

(The actual link is about a collection of William Carlos Williams audio.)

I couldn’t help myself, on either count, but I had just seen an episode of Dr. Katz with crazy old Emo Philips in it….

“Fewer”, dammit!

So I’m watching Top Chef, and a commercial for this HPV/cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil comes on. Now don’t get me wrong, I think this thing is great— it’s a real breakthrough, and HPV is a remarkably common virus.

But the tagline is “One Less”, as in “one less woman to get cancer”, which just makes me want to bash my head against the wall. The words “one” and “less” never go together (at least, I can’t think of why they would). I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one. Anyone else echo my nerdy nerdy frustration?

Yep, more than three

Hah: The College I Attend Has Just The Right Number Of Indian Dance Groups

Yeah, I guess Penn is past that limit, then…

It is, actually!

I don’t usually link to things like CollegeHumor, but this one I just found is too good to pass up: Lines From Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic,” Modified to Actually Make them Ironic.

A black fly in your Chardonnay… poured to celebrate the successful fumigation of your recently purchased vineyard in southern France.

A death row pardon two minutes too late… because the governor was too busy watching Dead Man Walking to grant clemency any earlier.

A traffic jam when you’re already late… to receive an award from the Municipal Planning Board for reducing the city’s automobile congestion 80 percent.

Each one is — or at least approaches — laugh-out-loud funny.
