My pseudo-iPhone

Posted on Monday June 11, 2007 at 1:15 am.

I have a confession to make. I re-watched the MWSF keynote from January where Steve introduces the iPhone. I’m just that geared up for tomorrow’s Stevenote at WWDC.

And when he got to the part where the iPhone rings (at about 57:54, incidentally), I decided it would be fun to have that as a ringtone. Makes sense, right? And of course, people have posted it as a short MP3 clip. But the quality isn’t so hot, so I found a midi. I put that in Finale, matched the tempo precisely, and changed the midi instrument to xylophone. So here’s my synthesized version of the iPhone ringtone.

I know, it’s not quite right, is it? I know someone who would tell me that the mallets are too hard, or that’s it’s a marimba, dumbass. (And I did notice the subtle delay between the two notes of the high chord.) But that person is free to download the midi, put it in his fancy new drumline software, and get it perfect for me.

Oh wait… does that give away who it is? :-)

Anyway, I discovered that it really doesn’t matter how good it sounds, because my phone speaker is too lo-fi to tell the difference between… well, much of anything. But it was fun.

And I can’t wait for tomorrow afternoon. Tell me something good, Steve.

Also, an Apple video rental service? Yeah, I think I’d do that if the quality was there (zero doubt if it were HD), especially if I’m one of the iPhone pod-people by then.

  1. Now that wouldn’t be little old me would it? Yes, it is a marimba, I don’t know if the mallets are too hard cause I haven’t heard the original…BUT should you want to send me the finale file my software allows for different hardness of mallets, so I could adjust it. Just sayin…

  2. Why, of course not. But now that you mention it… :-)

  3. Thanks, your version (obviously) sounds so much better than the ripped-from-crappy-video one :p
