Judged by one’s bookshelf

This article makes me want to revise my Facebook “Favorite Books”, which are currently listed as:

House of Leaves, His Dark Materials, AHWOSG, H2G2, and anything by Sedaris, Vonnegut, Heinlein, Tolkien, Jorge Luis Borges, Bret Easton Ellis, or Ian McEwan, plus nerdy science books like Feynman, Dawkins, Brian Greene, and V.S. Ramachandran.

What does that say about me? That I’m a nerd, yes, but certainly not too highbrow, right? I didn’t even mention anything existential. Too many acronyms perhaps?

In unexpected casting news…

I just saw a trailer for an urban crime movie called Street Kings, and, uh… Hugh Laurie’s in it.

He’s only in the trailer for a second, and unfortunately, no British accent.

It’s written by the same guy as Training Day, and the cast is more-or-less decent. Could be worth a watch on DVD.

Self-absorption is underrated

Hey, this looks pretty good.

Ellen Page’s charm makes up for the fact that she’s playing a teenage Republican, Thomas Haden-Church is always entertaining, and Sarah Jessica Parker looks downright tolerable (high praise for her). We’ll see how well Dennis Quaid can pull off the absent-minded professor.

I have nothing to add

Sorry for the link to Faux News, but here’s my nomination for “Headline of the Century”.

More on the story here. Quotation of the century after the break.

Hm, how will I get it home?

Sweet— I scored a surplus G4 “MDD” Power Mac from our lab to use as a media server, mostly so I don’t have to keep plugging my Powerbook into my TV to watch downloaded movies or TV.

The sad thing is that it’s a dual-1.25 gHz processor machine, while my 4.5-year-old laptop only has a single 1.25. Oh well. Still works fine (usually).

Go for the knees

I’m still laughing about this analogy.

Well, laughing in an if-only-it-weren’t-true sort of way.

Among other reasons

Why We Should Fear a McCain Presidency.

You don’t have to convince me— as much as I dislike the NY Senator’s turn towards GOPish tactics of late, I’d prefer her to McCain. (Of course, I think she has a thinner shot at winning in November…)

I like “audacity of hopelessness”

Posted on Tuesday March 25, 2008 at 10:30 am.

In an editorial entitled “The Long Defeat” (emphasis on “defeat”, I hope), David Brooks discusses some harsh truths of the next few months in the nomination process— harsh truths for everyone involved: the country, the party, and Hillary.

Let’s take a look at what she’s going to put her party through for the sake of that 5 percent chance [of securing the nomination]: The Democratic Party is probably going to have to endure another three months of daily sniping. For another three months, we’ll have the Carvilles likening the Obamaites to Judas and former generals accusing Clintonites of McCarthyism. For three months, we’ll have the daily round of résumé padding and sulfurous conference calls. We’ll have campaign aides blurting “blue dress” and only-because-he’s-black references as they let slip their private contempt.

Naturally, he takes the Clinton campaign to task more than Obama’s:

When you step back and think about it, she is amazing. She possesses the audacity of hopelessness.

Why does she go on like this? Does Clinton privately believe that Obama is so incompetent that only she can deliver the policies they both support? Is she simply selfish, and willing to put her party through agony for the sake of her slender chance? Are leading Democrats so narcissistic that they would create bitter stagnation even if they were granted one-party rule?

No. He should be prohibited.

This makes me feel a little ill.

Scratch that. Very ill.

Executive transvestite, mind you

Just got my ticket to see Eddie Izzard’s tour stop in Philadelphia on May 6th. And I’m working on dragging along a couple coworkers along as well.

Last time I saw him in person was for his “Sexie” tour in 2003, when I somehow lucked into a ticket in like the 4th row, center. It was pretty amazing. I haven’t seen any of his material since then; I hope his film and TV work hasn’t slowed it down.
