What, only seven?

Hilaaaaaarious.

On a lighter note

If you didn’t watch The Soup this week, here’s a peek at what you missed.

See also: Keith Olbermann.
See also: Simon Pegg.

Hilarious. Highly recommend catching a rerun.

Update:
Don’t worry about that rerun; the whole thing was Olbermann’s #1 story on Countdown, except that they cut one hilarious line*.

* Right after Joel says something like, “We’ll see it right after this ‘dirty mouth moment’,” Olbermann asks incredulously, “You have sponsors?” Laughter ensues.

Close to home

2 dead, 7 hurt in a shooting at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, in Knoxville. (A second victim succumbed to her injuries this evening.)

“Just make sure you let people know that Greg McKendry is a hero, an absolute hero.”

This is incredibly upsetting to me. A UU church in a southern town, just a mile away from a major university… Put it this way: one woman’s question, “Who would have thought, here in Knoxville?” could far too easily have been, well… literally closer to home.

Update:
I think what scares me most at this point is the possibility that this wasn’t random— that it was targeted. We’re such an easygoing (for the most part) and nonviolent religion, I think that we don’t quite know how to react when something like this happens. Not that anyone does, of course, but I can’t shake the feeling that an incident like this is just so antithetical to everything that is fundamentally UU. The possibility that it’s an attack on the idea of UUism, or some part thereof, is just too disturbing to think about right now.

I have to stop watching the news, at least for a little while.

Update 2:
Sinkford has issued a statement.

A tragedy such as this makes us acutely conscious of the beauty and fragility of our lives and those of our loved ones. I am especially saddened by this intrusion of violence into a worship service involving children and youth. I know that many people, both in Knoxville and around the country, are struggling with shock and grief right now. I pray that those so affected will find strength and comfort.

Not that I disagree, really

Check your math, Bravo. Models are supposed to be the stereotypically dumb ones.

Speaking of audacity…

That doesn’t even make sense!

The McCampaign has now devolved into “So’s your stupid head!” playground-insult tactics. I think he’s now going for the “any press is good press” strategy of being mocked on any news show with half a brain.

Can we just call this thing already?

“Y?” indeed

I’m finally going to see The Dark Knight tonight (to-Knight?). And in IMAX, no less.

So this seems appropriate:

Momblog on WaPo

Wow: my mom guest-blogged on the Washington Post site. I’m suitably surprised and impressed.

Though I was a bit sad not to get a mention, something along the lines of, “Had my 23-year-old son been living at home, he surely would have been the lone family member not to participate.” Ah well.

Bias this, dimwits

The media are idiots. But what else is new?

Instead of covering what’s actually happening, they have to drum up idiotic criticism of Obama in the face of “biased” coverage accusations. How about becoming really unbiased and properly covering McCain’s surge timeline retardation?

Savage hate

Posted on Monday July 21, 2008 at 10:36 pm.

Hooray conservative people trying to talk about science!

No cheating— guess who Michael Savage is talking about:

“In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out,” Savage said on his radio program last Wednesday. [...]

On his radio show last week, he said: “What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, `Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.’”

That’s right… children with autism.

Oh my oh my oh my. I’m not sure whether this is more infuriating or heartbreaking. It’s… baffling. No words are coming.

All the way from France

Haven’t had any Vampire Weekend links in a while, but here’s a doozy: the boys take to the streets of Paris and play a few tunes— in a deserted plaza, at a corner booth in a bar, walking down the street.

Definitely worth a look— if this doesn’t convince you that they’re really cool, low-key guys, nothing will.

And hey— Ezra’s a Taylor fan too!
